OddGodfrey: The Oddly Compelling Story of a Sailing Circumnavigation of the World

The oddly compelling story of a bid to sail around the world

The Great Computer Debacle of 2019

by Leslie Godfrey in Sailing Season 2019, Malaysia

Where have we been for two weeks? What is going on with Sonrisa? Are you ever going to post a blog again? Are you ever going sailing again?

I know! I know!

For months now I’ve been nursing my computer along. Just when I would think it was finally good and dead, it would buzz back to life without warning and stick around for another week. So, I’d try to pull all those Thailand Photos and stories I’d already written and edited off my computer, then of course, it would die again and I’d be left with the unedited, unculled, and the rough drafts.

So, a few weeks ago, I had tried to start over on Andrew’s computer. One morning, Andrew so lovingly made me a “Treat” a Vietnamese drip coffee with sweetened condensed milk while I did my morning writing routine. I promptly tossed that Vietnamese Coffee atop Andrew’s computer. And all at once, a formerly two computer family had zero.

“Tragedy! Tragedy!” I wailed and gnashed my teeth.

“Oh no! Not my fuel and mileage spreadsheet!” Andrew momentarily loses all dignity. “What will Kitty and I watch movies on now!?’

Together we work to rescue the budget tracker and fuel spreadsheets just before his computer shorts out. I take it to a computer repair shop and they are able to salvage it after a week or so in the shop. The mouse pad doesn’t work now, but the fuel/mileage spreadsheet has been spared!

For me, I hunted and pecked through Langkawi’s slim computer offerings, then eventually acquired a new rig while visiting a bustling and more urbanized island a short flight away - Peneng. Its still a strange experience to want to buy something, and simply not be able find/buy/ship whatever it is you want.

In the midst of all this, Andrew is working very hard in the boatyard from morning until night to get Sonrisa in order. So, I’m giving up on the Thailand stories for a while, (I’m sure I”ll back fill them in later because that part of our trip was so much fun) and tomorrow you will have the first post in a few to bring you up to speed on Sonrisa’s state of affairs.

Let’s just say she’s even feeling well enough to start writing again. The Oddgodfreys and their computers are back!!!

Happy Monday!
