OddGodfrey: The Oddly Compelling Story of a Sailing Circumnavigation of the World

The oddly compelling story of a bid to sail around the world

February 17, 2024

Hotel California

by Leslie Godfrey in Dominican Republic, Sailing Season 2024

When we decided to hurricane season over in Luperon, people confirmed it was a great place. It has not been hit by a hurricane in any of the 100 years we’ve been tracking hurricane events. It’s quiet, safe, the town is filled with nice people. Overall great! “Be forewarned! It’s like Hotel California. You can never leave!”

We interpreted this warning to be rooted in everyone’s love for this enjoyable place.

Turns out, its more rooted in the fact that anytime there is viable sailing wind, the government closes the port to exit and they won’t let us check out!

This happened to us two weekends ago. We had a strong but possibly perfect weather window. Sunny, no squalls, strong wind, sure some waves but the same kind of waves we’ve seen over and over…

and over…

and over…

and over…(yeah, waves are like that.)

They locked us in again a second time last weekend.

This also happened to be Andrew’s birthday weekend. So, I made him “Birthday panCakes” for breakfast, we joined the sailing crowd for “Sunday-Funday” at a local homestay style resort with a pool and cabanas, and then we settled in to watch the Super-Bowl from home while cuddling with Poppet.

This week we returned to watching the weather, hoping to grab that two day weather window over a weekend. On Tuesday, we realized that if we didn’t move off the dock on that morning’s high tide, the high tides wouldn’t be quite so high and we might not have enough water to make it out of the hurricane hole we’d dug for ourselves. So, we moved out to the anchorage. There, Poppet discovered to her joy that we have a little boat to go with her big boat. She also quite enjoyed watching the moonlight flickering over calm water.

In the meantime, I worked on some catch up posts. If you are interested, you can read the story of our passage from Namibia to St. Helena here:
